Jewellery Selling Tips

This preparation increases your chance of selling your ring, jewellery or diamond in the Diamonds Directory classifieds, however you are not required to take all of these steps.

Rings / Jewellery

A: If item has been previously worn we recommend taking it to a manufacturing jeweller and asking them to restore it to brand new. A new presentation box / case is recommended to present the item to prospective buyers. Ask the jeweller, or you can also buy from a jeweller supplies outlet.

B: Take a close up photo of the item (your camera would need a macro lens).

C: Take item to a jewellery valuer and arrange an independent valuation. Note: Most valuers have a suitable camera to take a close up photo of your item(s), which can be integrated with the valuation.

D: Upload copy of valuation certificate in your classified advertisement.

E: Upload photo of the item(s) (if not included in the valuation certificate) in your classified advertisement.

F: If buyer was concerned about the size, whether item fits or not then you may wish to let them know that rings and most types of jewellery can be resized (if necessary) by a good manufacturing jeweller at a nominal charge, approx: $50 average price for an 18 Karat gold ring resize.
For ladies the average ring finger size is K and the generic stock size (as usually displayed in stores) is larger, ranging between M – N.

Diamonds

A: Take diamond to a gemmologist and arrange an independent diamond grading certificate.

B: Take diamond to a jewellery valuer and arrange an independent valuation. We recommend that the valuer is registered with the JATVC (Stands for: Jewellery and Allied Trades Valuers Council.) Note: Many gemmologists are also valuers so you may save time and cost by doing it in the one place.

C: Upload copy of the diamond grading certificate in your classified advertisement.

D: Upload copy of the valuation (if not already integrated with the diamond grading certificate) in your classified advertisement.

E: A photo is not as necessary for diamonds as it is for rings and other jewellery items, however if you have a nice close up photo of the diamond then it’s always good to upload it in your classified advertisement.

Rings, Jewellery and Diamonds are easier to sell when presented well, include the gemmologist / valuer reports and the seller has a friendly, helpful attitude.
The Diamonds Directory network is a great way to advertise and sell, whether you are a business or private.

A guide to pricing your items for sale

A: Brand new items for sale by a business usually sell anywhere between 60% to 100% of their retail value. So for example: If an engagement ring was valued at $10,000. The selling price is expected to range between $6,000 to $10,000.

B: Pre-owned (worn condition, not well presented) items for sale by a private seller usually sell anywhere between 25% to 50% of their retail value. So for example: If an engagement ring was valued at $10,000. The selling price is expected to range between $2,500 to $5,000.

C: Pre-owned (new condition, well presented) items for sale by a private seller or business usually sell anywhere between 40% to 80% of their retail value. So for example: If an engagement ring was valued at $10,000. The selling price is expected to range between $4,000 to $8,000.

Involving an Expert third party

A: If buyer is hesitant to purchase from you due to a lack of trust (very common when seller is private and not a business) then a solution is that you provide the buyer with as much information as you have about the item(s) you are selling. They may also want to inspect first, to see if they are happy with item(s). If they are interested to purchase, but only subject to confirming the authenticity and grade by an independent expert then you should be able to arrange with the buyer a meeting at premises of a gemmologist / jewellery valuer.
Once details are confirmed as OK by the gemmologist / valuer before you and the buyer then it is expected that the buyer may wish to proceed and buy the item(s) from you on the spot at the gemmologist’s / valuer’s premises. Make sure you and the buyer agree to the price and this procedure in detail and agree about who is paying the gemmologist / valuer before the meeting. The gemmologist / valuer is usually paid for their service regardless of the outcome, so make sure you and / or the buyer has put that into account at the meeting with the gemmologist / valuer.

B: An escrow service is another option if the buyer and seller are too far from each other and cannot meet with an expert third party like a gemmologist and / or a valuer, as explained above. There are a few specialist escrow companies around or you may also wish to discuss with a solicitor which may be able to arrange escrow at a reasonable price.
